Pride of Man

Pride - It’s the sin behind every sin. It was the original sin of Adam and Eve in the Garden. It is the root of each and every sin you struggle with today. Pride is the great sin of our hearts. It shows its face every time we proclaim, “I know better than God! I don’t need him! I am the master of my own fate!” Humility, on the other hand, is when we affirm the order of the universe and say, “God is King. Not my will, but yours be done!” In Daniel 4, King Nebuchadnezzar climbs to the heights of pride and is brought back to earth by God. This story is just one in the overall story of the Bible where we can either humble ourselves or God will humble us. In Daniel 4, we have the opportunity to learn from Nebuchadnezzar’s pride and realign our hearts to the order of the universe. King Nebuchadnezzar has a dream and asks all the magicians and enchanters to come tell him what it means. Sound familiar? Of course, none of the magicians or enchanters can tell the king what his dream means. Then the King asks Daniel. With grace, Daniel tells the king that his dream means he has become very strong and powerful, but will soon be forced to live like a beast of the field and eat grass. King Nebuchadnezzar did not like this at all! The king said that it was impossible for him to be like a beast of the field because he was the great king who had built Babylon with his mighty power. Then all of the sudden, a voice came from heaven that drove the king to go live as a beast of the field. Eventually, Nebuchadnezzar was restored to his position as king and he praised God as the most great and powerful.
